Summer Reading Program wraps up

Posted on August 30, 2023

Starting June 5, Camp Read S’More blasted off six weeks of programming for more than 20,000 children. The annual Summer Reading Program encouraged kids to read more by offering prizes for those who reached reading milestones. This year participants read over 22,000,000 minutes!

The Library offered a variety of additional programs to engage children throughout the summer, including Silly Safaris Animal Shows, BuildIt! Woodworking and Robots: Activate. Each program was designed to engage children of various ages and encouraged family participation. One mother reported that her son has a difficult time showing interest in anything during the summer, but he was engaged with the Robots: Activate program for the entire 90 minutes.

In addition to programming within the branches, the Indianapolis Public Library purchased new paperback books targeted to children ages 6-17. These books were packaged in group totes and delivered to summer schools, camps, and childcare centers to ensure kids of all ages had access to books that were age appropriate and exciting. The Danny R. Dean Fund and Lilly Endowment Inc. made these delivery totes possible.
